ABOUT THE FARM
The former United States Naval Academy Dairy Farm in Gambrills, MD, now MD Sunrise Farm, LLC, operates under the authority of the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks.
Building upon a rich agricultural tradition, MD Sunrise Farm offers a green agricultural oasis to its suburban neighbors. The farm is fully engaged in production agriculture using both certified organic and conventional protocols to maintain a healthy environment for people, food, and animals near major population centers. This working landscape provides a significant air and water filter, noise buffer and tranquil atmosphere, providing respite from the pervasive hardscape of the surrounding area, while producing food, feed and fun!
Here, at the farm, we:
operate a certified organic CSA
sell our own farm raised, grass-fed beef
host seasonal farm events including school and group tours.
The public is also invited to rent selected buildings. A treasured part of local history, the farm produced milk for the midshipmen at the Naval Academy from 1917 to 1998, assuring a safe, plentiful supply, and establishing a reputation for quality, cleanliness and adoption of modern agricultural practices. The farm's 1930's village setting remains intact, with some buildings offered for event rentals. This picturesque farm also hosts the Anne Arundel County 4-H Dairy Leasing Club, providing urban youth with a hands-on agricultural education experience.
City and country meet agreeably here, in west Anne Arundel County, only miles from the state and national capitals, but worlds away from the frantic pace of metropolitan life. We hope you will participate in one of our public events soon, and see for yourself what life is like, down on the farm!
Meet the People
Farm Manager, Josh Payne
Josh, his wife Amy, and their children, came to the farm from New York state where they worked with beef cattle. As you can see from the many pictures on , the entire family gets involved. Josh's responsibility has grown from the cattle to Farm Manager. Amy helps with event rentals, manages our Beef CSA, and works with the Master Gardeners. The children raise chickens, rabbits and abandoned calves! Surrounded by suburbia, this family leads a full scale farm life.
4-H Club Leader
Partners Matt & Megan Fry,
Edwin & Marian Fry
The Fry Family has been farming in Maryland for five generations. Recipients of the 2012 Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame award, they are transitioning the farm to Matt & Megan's ownership and leadership. The family lives in Chestertown, MD on Fair Hill Farm, a dairy and grain farm with 650 acres certified organic, and a milking herd of 560 cows. Marian & Ed, Univ. of MD alumni, are the 2006 Northeast Region winners of the Patrick Madden Award for Sustainable Agriculture, and the Chester Riverkeeper Award. Matt & Megan are both VA Tech Hokies and contributed to the family securing the NRCS Cooperator of the Year Award, as well as managing the dairy and beef herds and the Chestertown farm office.
Anne Arundel 4-H Dairy Leasing Club leader Gail Yeiser is both a University of Maryland alumna and former employee. The club meets and houses animals at MD Sunrise Farm. Gail is skilled in leading those with non-farm backgrounds through the initiations of "life with large animals." Both daughters, and other 4-H members, have gone on to agriculture related careers as a result of their 4-H involvement. (Obviously, although this cow is a beauty, Gail only has two legs and eats much less than daughter Emily's former 4-H project, Ghosty!)
